DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury and look through their trash. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
